Despite what the title says, this isn’t an article about focus.

It’s not about flow states or deep work or sleep and caffeine levels.

These all play into whether we end up focusing on one thing or not.

But it’s not about those ideas.

It’s about the real, lived experience of not being able to focus and the real, tactical ways to overcome it.

The Perpetual Focus Struggle

Despite not wanting to admit it, I regularly struggle with multi-tasking and managing my energy levels.

Today I was in trouble. For many of the usual reasons — I often overeat, which leads to stomach aches, poor sleep, and cranky moods. I’ve been having stomach aches all weekend, and today (which is a holiday Monday) I was painfully managing this state while trying to find something to write about.

But no matter how hard I tried to settle on a topic, I was also preoccupied with why — why is it so hard to choose one thing to write about?
