Relationships Aren’t Meant to Make You Happy

Break ups happen all the time.

Sofia and Joe Manganiello. Ariana and Dalton Gomez. Taylor and Joe (this one in particular broke my heart).

I saw a comment about Sophia and Joe that said their different personalities played into the breakup — that they had different outlooks on life, different demeanors, she was quicker to emotion whereas he was calm and controlled.

The idea that daily annoyances (“Why are you talking on the phone so loud!?” I envisioned him thinking) factored into the breakup…

It sounded so backward to me.

Looking for happiness from another person

Look.

Not all relationships work out.

Only a small percentage of people make viable long-term partners for us, and sometimes, we’re with someone who doesn’t fit the bill.

With that caveat in mind though, sometimes we have skewed ideas about the purpose of romantic relationships.

We get into them looking for excitement, adventure, to learn new things, to grow, to fill moments of boredom.

I’ve been guilt of it.

We’re definitely not looking for more work. We don’t think of a relationship like taking on a…
